About 4 years ago, in December of 2015, I was invited by Macanache to take pictures at his first concert with The Putreds. Being a short time after the Colectiv tragedy, the backstage atmosphere was bleak. It was then that I realized artists' disposition and state of spirit is, in reality, different than that during concerts and that the effort exerted to create the perfect atmosphere does not come across to those who come to see the show. This personal insight is how the "Născut în Underground" (Born in Underground) project came to life.
"Born in Underground" is not only a collection of before and after the concert photos of Romanian music industry artists. This project also documents the unseen emotion of both those who are taking the stage for the first time and those for whom it is already second nature, but who started from the same underground movement.
Music is like the sounds of the songs - constantly moving - as was my journey through the underground movement: full of happenings, photos taken at the last moment and thousands of miles traveled to give visual form to artists' emotions.
Most of the artists I talked to were delighted with the idea and this is how I managed to convey their feelings from behind the scenes, to you. A culmination of several years' work, the project documents over 50 bands from the underground music scene.
The project launch is planned for the end of the year and will consist of a photo exhibition, a concert and a book. The stories are written by Matei Cristian - a survivor of the Colectiv tragedy - who faced death at the concert of one of the best bands from the Romanian underground music scene, Goodbye to Gravity.
